Oh the commercials

Yeah, we all noticed this... You're watching this really great television show. Then, sometime later, the main character found himself in an "oh no I'm in big trouble" situation. It's the cue for the commercials to roll in. And you were forced to waste 5 minutes before finally get to know the main characters fate.

Have you ever wondered why cliffhangers are oh so often used just before the commercials? It's so that the viewers stay put on their seats for their intense curiousity of what's gonna happen to the main characters next, so that, in the process, they were forced to watch all these fancy commercials designed to grab their attention. Even documentaries and news managed to pull this neat trick off, by telling the audience what the next story will be about, after the first one has ended just before the commercials start. Curiousity gurantees the audience will remain where they are, just because they wanted to know what the hell the next story will be about.

Some television series do a really lame way of doing this... Sometimes, I've seen a situation where the main character is about to be killed by an enemy. Then the commercials ran in for 5 minutes. Then, the show finally returns where we left off, so that we get to know what's going to happen to the main character. It turns out that the "enemy" is actually that main character's best friend disguised as an enemy, and just for fun, he scared the crap out of the main character for the moment. Bleh. Lame!
